St. Louis Lambert Airport
St Louis Lambert International Airport, 10701 Lambert International Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63145, USAFacts and History about St. Louis Lambert Airport
St. Louis Lambert International Airport, formerly known as Lambert-St. Louis International Airport, is also referred to as St. Louis Airport, St. Louis International Airport, Lambert Field, Lambert Airport or simply just Lambert. The airport’s IATA code is STL and the ICAO code is KSTL, and the airport also goes by the name STL or STL Airport. This airport is not to be confused with the MidAmerica St. Louis Airport that is located only 37 mi/60 km east of STL.
It is an international airport that serves the greater, metropolitan St. Louis, Missouri area and it is the largest and the busiest airport in the state of Missouri.
The airport is located approximately 14 mi/22.5 km northwest of downtown St. Louis, Missouri. The airport is owned by the City of St. Louis and it is operated by St. Louis City Airport Commission. It is the hub for Air Choice One and Cape Air.
St. Louis Lambert International Airport got its name from Albert Bond Lambert, an Olympic silver medalist golfer and the first person in St. Louis to receive a pilot’s license.
Starting out as a balloon launching field called Kinloch Field in the 1890s the airfield had a visit by the Wright brothers and their Exhibition Team and the airfield was also where President Theodore Roosevelt became the first U.S President to fly. Charles Lindbergh's first piloting job was for Robertson Aircraft Corporation flying airmail from Lambert Field, a job he left only a week before his record-breaking flight to Paris in 1927. At this point the airport was still owned by Lambert, but in 1928 he leased the airport to the City of St. Louis for $1 before he sold it to them later that same year. This made it the first municipally owned airport in the country.
The first terminal building opened in 1933 and in 1945 a new terminal was built as an expansion of the airport and yet another terminal, a three-domed design, was completed in 1956 with a fourth dome added in 1965.
Today the airport has two terminals named simply Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Terminal 2 is the larger of the two with 68 gates and four concourses lettered A-D, while Terminal 1 is where all international flights without border preclearance are processed and it has 18 gates and one concourse named E.
The airport has four concrete surfaced runways, three parallel and one crosswind. The runways measure 11,019 ft/3,359 m, 9,003 ft/2,744 m, 9,001 ft/2,743 m and 7,607 ft/2,319 m respectively where the shortest is the crosswind located runway.
The airport saw 6,302,402 passengers come through it in 2020, which was a decrease from 2019 when they saw more than 15 million passengers move through it. However, the airport’s busiest year was in 2000 when they marked over 30 million travelers for the year.
